Friday Night Hoops- 12/17/2010
As we now near a month into the IHSA Basketball season there have been a few great storylines thus far.
12th ranked East Aurora (6-1) has soared up the rankings this season thanks in large part to four star Connecticut bound recruit Ryan Boatright. At just 5'10, 150 he has not only become one of the top players in the state, but also in the country.
Boatright is coming off back to back spectacular games in which he dropped 63 and 39 points respectively. He is listed as the 11th best Point Guard in the country as well as the 48th ranked player in the country.
East Aurora has to be considered a sleeper to go down state because of the superstar play from Boatright, however there are quite a few other teams who have to be mentioned.
Simeon is ranked number one in the state and after demolishing Wallace HS out of Gary,IN 85-38 on ESPNU, some question if Simeon will lose a game this season.
Two teams that I love a lot this year are the 10th ranked Glenbard East Rams and the 3rd ranked Benet Academy Red Wings.
Glenbard East is led by Zach Miller who is committed to Northern Illinois and Jon Hill who has committed to Illinois State.
Benet has arguably the best big man (listed at 7 feet) in the state as Frank Kaminsky has led the 3rd ranked Red Wings to an undefeated season so far.
There is still a long way to go in the basketball season, but make sure you stay tuned to sportstownchicago.com every Friday starting at 5pm as we have our weekly Friday Night Hoops show covering IHSA Basketball as well as college and professional sports. At Sportstown Chicago we are in a league of our own!

Week 3 Fast Break
It's Friday Night, and another great High School Hoops matchup will be featured on SportsTownChicago.com with pregame coverage starting at 5 PM! This week's match-up will feature the Dukes of York going to Lyons Township to take on the Lions. It's a good West Suburban Silver Conference matchup early in the season!
On Tuesday, the previous High School Hoops coverage on SportsTownChicago.com it was a first as Girl's Basketball was covered. The Glenbard South Raiders fell to 9-1 on the season as they lost to the Wheaton North Falcons. It was an exciting match-up that ended 55-50 and went down to the wire. It was a great way to start the week off as tonight's match-up should also go down to the wire.
Remember it all starts tonight with the pre-game show at 5 PM followed by the York at Lyons Township match-up at 7:30 PM on SportsTownChicago.com.

Benet wins in a shocker!
The Benet Redwings have upset the #1 seeded Glenbard East Rams 68-54 and have moved onto the Hinsdale Central Supersectional to take on Simeon, who defeated Mt. Carmel 55-47. The Redwings were led by point guard Dave Sobolewski with 32 points and was able to break the Glenbard East press all night.
Make sure to tune into the post game show to hear what Robert Zackery, Dr. Pete and I (Rick Camp) think about this upset here on sportstownchicago.com! Call us with your thoughts at 630-403-5200 or email us at Sportstownchicago@gmail.com!

Benet with the Lead at the Half
A big surprise in the Nequa Valley Sectional at halftime Benet is on top of Glenbard East 27-16. Dave Sobolewski leads all scores with 15 points and has almost outscored the Rams by himself! At the half Robert Zackary thinks the Rams will come back to win this game, however, I (Rick) believe Benet is proving they can hang and will hang on to upset the #1 seeded Glenbard East Rams.
Make sure to keep it tuned into sportstownchicago.com to see who wins this sectional matchup!

Game of the Night
#3 seed at the Nequa Valley sectional Benet (25-3) takes on the top seed of the sectional Glenbard East (27-1)! The Rams have a 21 game win streak going and haven't won a sectional since 1964! Benet hasn't won a sectional since 1983.
The winner of this game will take on the winner of Mt. Carmel vs. Simeon in the Hinsdale Central Supersectional!
Will the Redwings be able to slow down the Rams? Can Glenbard East handle the size of the Benet? Tune in to sportstownchicago.com for the answer!
Here are our predictions for the night!
Robert: Glenbard East over Benet 74-66
Rick: Glenbard East over Benet 68-60

Holt to the Bears?
Robert doesn't like the idea of bringing in Torry Holt, I (Rick) am in favor of it and it seems like Dr. Pete is in favor of it too. Could he be the Bears #2 receiver, or the #4? Is he the veteran leadership the Bears' WR corps needs or would he just be the Bears version of Lindsey Hunter?
Starting off the Night
Rick Camp here in studio with Dr. Pete and Robert Zackery. Game of the night at Nequa Valley High School is Benet vs. Glenbard East for the sectional title! Winner will play the winner of Mt. Carmel vs. Simeon winner in the Hinsdale Central Supersectional!

St. Rita Closer Look vs St. Laurence
Saint Rita comes into the game tonight against St. Laurence with a 9-10 record and 4-5 in conference play, so this came is critical to get back to .500 on the season, as well as in conference play. The Mustangs have lost 2 games in a row on the road at Loyola and Mount Carmel, so maybe the home cooking against a struggling St. Laurence club will do the trick.
The key for the Mustangs to win in this game is going to be the scoring balance. In the loss to Mt. Carmel over 75% of the teams points were scored by 3 players. So while getting the lone senior Lane Barlow and the big man Tim Gorski off to good starts will be critical, so will balance that will make St. Laurence stay honest on the defensive end.
If Barlow and Gorski can have similar night as they did against the Caravan (20 and 12 points respectively) and get some help from AJ Avery, Tony Hicks among others, the Mustangs should win this matchup tonight with ease.

#1 Goes Down
Waukegan goes down to Maine South as 3 of the best players from Waukegan were suspended for the game. Their fight gave Maine South a punchers chance and they took advantage with a knockout in one of the final minutes! It will be interesting to see how long the players are suspended for Waukegan and how the team will adjust without them. Keep it tuned to sportstownchicago.com for updates!
Glenbard East Dominance
In the 2nd half the Rams of Glenbard East asserted their will on the Tigers of Wheaton Warrenville South. An 8 point halftime lead ballooned into a 73-40 blowout, as the Rams showed why they only have 1 loss by 1 point on the season so far. As I (Rick Camp) predicted, the speed of the game by Glenbard East became too much for WWS. Ian and I both thought that this game would be a double digit difference, but not this big! An impressive win for the Rams!
WWS @ Glenbard East Halftime
At the half, Glenbard East leads WWS 26-18. A close game between a couple of the top teams in the DVC, keep it tuned into Friday Night Hoops to see how the 2nd half unfolds only here on sportstownchicago.com!
WWS @ Glenbard East Predictions
Here are our predictions for the game of the night!
Ian- Glenbard East 65 WWS 50

Bears Lack of OC
The Bears are having a lot of issues finding an Offensive Coordinator, so they interviewed Mike Martz. Is this a good thing or not? Are we just settling? Why did the Bears not go to him 1st if they liked him so much. What are your thoughts?
Here Come the Hawks!
Lots of great things going on with the Blackhawks right now, as they are 2nd in the west and NHL with 78 points and last night they just defeated the only team above them, the San Jose Sharks, in their own place!
They are 5-2 on this road trip so far and are looking like one of, if not the best team in hockey? Are the right now and what can they do to confirm that? call us at 630-403-5200 or email at sportstownchicago@gmail.com!

Oh the BCS
What can we do to improve the BCS, would you go back to just the bowl system with no BCS? Would you go to an 8 team or 12 team playoff or would you keep it the way it is? Give us a call at 630-403-5200 or sportstownchicago@gmail.com!
Song Request?
Send in your song requests for rejoins if you want, I'll pass that over to Dr. Pete, or send in your requests to sportstownchicago@gmail.com!
Pro Bowl Skills Challenge
Do you like my idea of a skills challenge format instead of a game for the Pro Bowl? Also are the Super Bowl teams getting screwed over by having their best players gone from the team for a couple games. Leave us an email at Sportstownchicago@gmail.com or call us at 630-403-5200!

Rick Camp here, a little fun inside info from the sportstownchicago.com, I have concluded from the singing of "Can't Always Get What You Want" that Dr. Pete is tone deaf, ouch!

Bulls All Star, Really?!?
Derrick Rose is the first Bulls all star since MICHAEL JORDAN!!! He is making the team better by being more selfish and it's getting recognized. What do you think about that? 630-403-5200!
Kurt Warner Hall of Famer?
Talking Kurt Warner's Hall of Fame candidacy here on sportstownchicago.com! What are your thoughts, are 6 good years enough for the Hall? Call us at 630-403-5200 or email us at sportstownchicago.com!

Odd Happenings in Professional Sports
A lot of weird things going on in professional sports tonight! The Bulls got in a fight with the Bucks. James Johnson and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute got ejected, more details to come. Also in New Jersey, the Devils were down 3-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning and then in the middle of the 2nd period, THE LIGHTS WENT OUT! The game had to be rescheduled. Maybe that will help the Devils get into that game.

Ram Domination
The Glenbard North Rams were able to keep their lead against the Glenbard North Panthers with a 72-59 victory. The guards of the Rams were able to dictate the tempo of the game and led the Rams to another DVC win.

Glenbard East over Glenbard North 41-23 @ Half
It seems that as we have predicted the Rams have taken control of the game, as the guard play of Glenbard East has been overpowering against the Panthers. The big stat is that the top scorer of the Panthers James Fleming has 2 points at the half, he averages 20.2ppg.
Is there really any chance of a Panther comeback in the 2nd half? In the sportstownchicago.com studio it's a resounding NO.

Games of the Night
Naperville North @Naperville Central
The big men of Naperville North should control this game, but the Red Hawks have some size to compete with the Huskies. It looks like the depth and guards of the Huskies may be the difference.
Bobby: NN over NC 61-55
Robert: NN over NC 65-40
Rick: NN over NC 65-53
Glenbard East @ Glenbard North
The guards of Glenbard East will probably be the difference in the game and it seems like there is agreement on the Rams dominating this matchup.

Robert: GE over GN 75-60
Rick: GE over GN 77-61

How Does This Happen?!?
Rick Camp here, how do people like Todd Zeile, Kevin Appier and Ray Lankford get on the Hall of Fame ballot? Well at least they will not be on the ballot anymore because they got less than 27 votes, actually those listed got NONE, as they should!
The Hawk in the Hall
We are going to talk about Andre Dawson getting into the Hall of Fame when we get back here on sportstownchicago.com...did he deserve to get in?
Other NFL Notes
Do you think that Mike Shanahan is going to be successful in DC? We are talking about coaching moves and the disappointments of the past NFL season. Who are your disappointments and what are your thoughts on the new regime in Washington?
Bears Coaches
Who should fill in as the new coordinators for the Chicago Bears? Now that Charlie Weis and it sounds like Jeremy Bates are likely off the market, who is left to be the next OC? Is Lovie going to just pick one of his guys for the DC or will he get a bit of a differing opinion? We will talk about that next and we want to know what you think!
Seahawks Situation
Very interesting things happening in the Pacific Northwest as the Seahawks fired head coach Jim Mora Jr and the big rumor is that USC head coach Pete Carroll will leave for the Seahawks job with heat coming upon the program and some money being thrown around to players, what are your thoughts? Ours coming up in just a minute, don't miss it!
McCoy or Gilbert, better pro prospect?
Rick Camp here, I believe that from what I saw last night that true freshman QB Garrett Gilbert will be a better pro prospect than Colt McCoy, what are your thoughts?
